Roamers Empty Roamers

Post by Sath Fri Mar 27, 2020 8:00 pm

>> SATH

Sath weaved between the trees that grew around the river, her heavy paws carrying her on the last leg of today's patrol. She was headed out to check the small, rocky waterfall of sorts - only one foot high, really - that the territories western river rushed past as it fled from the twin lakes that were much further away. It was a good landmark to separate what had become known among the pack as the inner and outer reaches of their claim.

She moved at a brisk trot, rusty fur ruffled by a warm spring breeze. If Sath was quick she bet she could make it back to the den before nightfall, and the thought pushed her forward with bright, determined eyes. She was slowly but surely becoming more familiar with the members that lived here, and to say she liked the company was an understatement. Sure, none of them were too familiar, or trusting of each other for that matter, but she enjoyed getting to know everyone so far. It was just beginning to feel like pack. Maybe with some time they could grow it into family.

When the rush of water made it's way to her ears she knew she was close. Sath swerved to head back to the river's edge, nose dutifully sniffing the air and eyes scanning the area. If she saw that fucking bear, or that fucking rabbit, then perhaps her trip here would be extended. Otherwise, Sath took her time, eyes the color of the newly resurrected grass taking in the land. Her tail swayed patiently behind her as she walked, just checking things out.

The feeling of lush grass beneath his feet and between his toes was foreign to him, as he's grown accustomed to wondering across sand. But, he couldn't say he wasn't enjoying his time away from the beach and from the ocean. He figured a trek taken southwards would be nice and he hasn't gotten the chance to explore the territory more, especially the dense forest that wasn't too far off from the sea.

Spring was doing wonders with the place; all the foliage and the trees and the sprouting flowers were breathtaking, especially to a fella who's never really set foot in a forest. He took his time wondering about, slipping through the maze of trees and spending some time to venture out in clearings filled to the brim with tall, ticklish grass and pretty flora of the sorts. For a minute there, the fact that he's in claimed territory slipped his mind completely as he reveled in the views.

Toves was naturally drawn towards the sound of rushing water and was met by a small but pretty waterfall. He meandered closer to admire the tumbling downpour onto the rocky outcrop below and once he found a comfortable embankment, he seated himself and took a lazy drink of water, all the while listening to the pleasing sounds of the forest and not quite catching the scent of pack life.

Notes: It's not very good, but it's somethin' ! uwu

>> SATH

Sath was nearing the small falls now, unknowingly humming a low tune to herself. Nothing was catching her eye -or ears or nose, for that matter - so all must be in place, but a sense of duty drove her onward. Before long a familiar formation of rocks came into view, butted up closely to the rambling water which dipped off out of view. Her humming stopped; she was on the high ground just out of sight from the sloping land below when her intuition told her something was here.

Sath ducked behind the rock formation, eyes suspicious. She was too close to the water to get a good, clear whiff, so peeking out over the top of the boulders was the next best move. She shuffled her front paws onto a ledge and carefully raised herself up...

Rather than waste another moment being cautious, once Sath saw who her company was her brow quirked up. It was just a wolf. A male, by the looks of it, lean and off-white in color with his head bowed to get a drink. Sath jumped up onto the rocks so she was standing tall above the stranger, her posture confident yet from far from aggressive. She coughed loud enough to let the man know he wasn't alone, and then grinned slyly, speaking loud enough to be heard over the tumbling water. "Nice view, innit?"

Toves hadn't heard anything suspicious over the sounds of the waterfall. His ears were alert and forward, yet failed to catch notice of anything he should be concerned about. He swore he caught a scent as he inhaled, though he foolishly decided to ignore it. So when a stranger had snuck up on his flank, standing atop a boulder that overlooked both Toves and the water, he hadn't noticed until a cough made him jump.

He wheeled away from the water, nearly fumbling over his paws in the process, and his eyes were wide as he took in the sight of the stranger standing above him. The hair along his neck and spine rose out of surprise. The wolf was a female, he's assuming, and was standing confidently with an aura that hinted she was of importance. Her grin was as sharp as her green eyes and she smelled of pack wolf.

"Nice view, innit?" She spoke over the sounds of the stream, her voice strong. Toves took a step back, ready to bolt in case she is the owner of these grounds and didn't take kindly to trespassers.

"Yeah," he responded after clearing his throat, his posture tense and cautious. "You must be the Alpha around here?" He inquired, though he's pretty sure he guessed correctly. He made sure to keep his voice and expression even and his gaze averted out of respect.

Her entrance made the stranger startle, as expected, but Sath didn't move an inch from her place atop the rock. She smirked, patiently waiting for him to collect himself as his paws nearly lost their footing. He had a dark, memorable face, and the fur along his back rose in alarm. "Yeah," he said after clearing his throat, looking one sudden twitch away from bolting. "You must be the Alpha around here?"

"You catch on quick," Sath replied, a confident swish of her tail breaking her usual silence. She took the chance to hop down from her perch, large paws expertly carrying her down the face of the rock until she was back on the same land as the loner, a few meters of damp air the only thing separating them.

She didn't move to close the gap at all, taking in the stranger's weary, tired green gaze instead and testing a lungful of his scent now that they were closer. She didn't say anything at first, but then her face screwed up, confused. "Hm, I- I know that scent," she took another step forward, sampling the air again. Sath's eyes went alert, meeting his more boldly. "You. You've been at the lake downstream, haven't you?" Her tone was accusatory, but she made no move to pounce or attack. Sath was angry, all of a sudden, for not recognizing the salty, sea-like smell as a warning of a stranger nearby on her patrols to try and find a troublesome bear. It must've slipped her notice, amidst all the other new scents she was trying to learn. She leaned back and blinked, jutting her chin his way. She spared the formalities. "How long?"

The alpha lept down from her perch with confidence, causing Toves to take a hesitant step back, his ears skewing sideways in nervousness. "You catch on quick," she said. He gave a faint nod and readjusted his position upon the rocky ground, head lowering, gaze still averted. "I've heard about you from a pack member of yours. He spoke good of you." He said, recollecting the fresh memory of his conversation with her medic, Naveen.

He glanced up at her as she inhaled and took another step closer, another step into Toves' space. He felt the instinctual pull to step back and away from this Alphess' presence. Instead, his tail slotted itself between his legs submissively as her tone became accusatory. She asked about his past whereabouts without missing a beat.

"The...beach, actually," he nervously corrected her, "I've been there for a few days." Toves had no reason to lie. "I was actually going to seek you out and ask about recruitment." It had been a difficult decision that he spent mulling over after he departed from Naveen, who opened his mind up to the possibility of joining.

But given this first impression, he's doubtful. He licks his lips and briefly makes eye contact. "I've been on my own for a while now, and your medic Naveen spoke good of your pack. I'm... interested in joining, if you'd have me."

Sath was taken aback when the stranger told her he'd not only spoken to another pack mate before, but that he'd apparently heard about her. She couldn't even be flattered that it was good things he was told, instead her brows furrowed. She wasn't getting any weird vibes that his nerves were all a show, at least, he really did seem intimidated. "The...beach, actually. I've been there for a few days. I was actually going to seek you out and ask about recruitment."

"Sooner rather than later, I hope," she said, mood drier than before. Sath took a second to heave in a deep breath, then lowered her head and looked the male up and down. He revealed it was Naveen, who'd apparently been keeping a secret. But this male... he seemed nervous. Too nervous to lie. While the thought of him alone with the frail Medic made her blood curdle, he was not the only one to blame. She raised her head and squared herself. "I'm always looking for capable wolves with good intentions. What's your name, stranger?" If he was here to be doing what he must've already been - using this place as a land to live and scavenge on without contributing - then Sath would be more than happy to escort him away. But it was too early to tell.
